new-generation drilling methods in
distinct ways.
Newly-hired drillers – who have
just started in the industry and are
learning the trade of production blast
hole drilling – are impressed by the
MD6420C drill, but they may not have
enough experience on other models to
completely understand its benefits.
These drillers are typically young and
accustomed to digital technology. They
are comfortable allowing the
technology to work and intervene only
if there is an exception. In effect, the
MD6420C enables them to learn from
over 20 yrs of solid drilling experience
just by watching the machine in action.
Mid-level drillers – who generally
embrace new technologies – feel that
the MD6420C is great. They say it
takes pressure off of them as they
continue to develop their skill in using
the auto-functions and the drill control
touchscreen. Some mid-level drillers
admit that they cannot actually
out-drill the machines in auto drilling
mode. With the logic embedded in its
programming, the drill can navigate
through rough spots without operator
intervention. But if the operator has to
drill something out of the ordinary, he
or she can take over the controls. For
the most part, the driller is there
mainly to monitor the machine and
initiate the drill functions for
auto-level, single pass auto drilling
and auto jack retract. The driller will
then tram to the next hole position and
begin the process again.
Experienced drillers like the
technology but, with years of operating
experience on various machines, they
may prefer to stay behind the controls.
This type of driller typically uses the
auto-functions about half the time,
because they traditionally
have used hands-on control.
Interestingly, they tend to
enjoy competing with the
machine to see if they can
level and drill a quality hole
faster and more consistently.
Regardless of whether the
driller uses auto or manual
modes, the interlocks and
safety systems incorporated
into the machine help them
drill faster and achieve
quicker cycle times overall.
Whatever the experience
level, drill operators state
their appreciation for the
cab layout, additional
space, ergonomic controls
and computer interface,
which help ensure comfort
and safety. The design and
component placement give
a natural balance for
sure-footed stability while
tramming or drilling in
rough ground.
Since 2012, Cat
blasthole drills have
delivered top productivity,
cost-effectiveness and solid
life-cycle value, working in
one of the most demanding
mine sites in the
Globe-Miami district. With
durable structures and
advanced technologies, Cat
drills are helping Arizona
drillers take on the
challenges of mining a
difficult site and keeping it
productive for years to
come.
