Coal News
A
round-up of news from coal
projects around the world.
Australia
Australian Pacific Coal
According to a new independent
assessment, the Dartbrook project in
New South Wales contains total coal
resources of 1.2 billion t, comprising
466 million t of measured resources,
448 million t of indicated resources and
294 million t of inferred resources. Coal
quality analysis indicates the potential to
produce an 8% ash (air dried basis) PCI
product, as well as a range of thermal coal
products between 10% and 18% ash on an
air dried basis. The assessment was
commissioned by Australian Pacific Coal,
which is currently in the process of buying
Dartbook fromAnglo American and
Marubeni Coal.
Hume Coal
Hume Coal has submitted the mining
lease application (MLA) for its
metallurgical coal project to the
New South Wales State government. “The
recent submission of the MLA is another
step forward for Hume Coal as our staff
and consultants work determinedly
preparing the Environmental Impact
Statement for release later this year” said
Project Director Greig Duncan. Hume Coal
is a subsidiary of South Korean steelmaker,
POSCO.
Stanmore Coal
The JORC coal resource estimate for
Stanmore Coal’s Clifford project has
increased by 67% on the back of further
exploration work conducted last year. The
project resource now stands at
620 million t. The exploration work was
conducted in conjunction with Stanmore’s
funding partner, Japan Oil, Gas and Metals
Corp. (JOGMEC), and included 29 rotary
holes and 16 partially cored holes within
the Grange and Liberty areas of the
Clifford Project.
Canada
Atrum Coal
Atrum Coal has received a bulk sample
permit for its Groundhog North mining
complex from the British Columbia
government, according to a company
release. The permit allows the company to
extract 100 000 t of coal, enabling it to begin
supplying customers with trial cargoes of
Groundhog Ultra 10% ash anthracite for
testing in blastfurnaces and sinter plants.
Pacific American Coal
Pacific American Coal (PAK) has sold its
30% equity investment in GCI for
AUS$1 million. The sale will provide
funds to advance the development of the
Elko metallurgical coal project in
British Columbia. The board has recently
authorised a number of activities to
advance the project, including the
development of exploration plans to
improve JORC resource classification, the
preparation of the documentation required
for permitting and conceptual design for
mine layout and infrastructure. Elko
currently has a JORC resource of
257.5 million t and has the potential to
produce a hard coking coal product.
Indonesia
Cokal
Cokal has entered into discussions with
Indonesian company Blackspace to
provide funding for the development of
the Bumi Barito Mineral coal project
(BBM), a metallurgical coal project in
Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. A
Blackspace-controlled company has also
recently acquired a number of Cokal’s
non-core tenements, including the
company’s 75.2% stake in PT Silangkop
Nusa Raya and PT Kenungau Nusa Raya
and 75% stake in PT Anugerah Alam
Manuhing.
Poland
Balamara Resources
Balamara is on track to publish an
upgraded JORC Mineral Resource estimate
for its Sawin coal project in southeast
Poland after receiving results from recent
in-fill resources drilling. The company
completed the first four holes of the in-fill
programme with results outlining a zone of
2 m thick coal that is considerably thicker
and more consistent than previously
identified or modelled. Historical drilling
allowed Balamara to announce initial
inferred resources of 1.2 billion t last year.
The subsequent in-fill drilling started in
2015 and aims to provide a more complete
picture of the deposit.
Prairie Mining
Prairie Mining is continuing to make
progress on the permitting process for its
Lublin coal project, according to a
company news release, and is on schedule
to make a formal mining concession
application in 1H17.
Tanzania
Kibo Mining
Phase 1 of the Mbeya coal-to-power
project’s (MCPP) environmental and
social impact assessment (ESIA) was
successfully completed after the company
received notice from the Tanzanian
government that the ESIA studies for the
Mbeya coal mine and Mbeya power plant
have both been accepted and officially
registered.
