Coal News
Coal News
A
round up of news from coal
projects around the world.
Australia
Anglo American
The New South Wales Planning
Commission (PAC) has rejected the
proposed Drayton South expansion project
in order to protect two thoroughbred horse
studs. As a result, the mine will wind down
operations next year.
Peabody Energy
Peabody’s Wambo coal mine in the Hunter
Valley region of New South Wales has
received permission to expand its
operations from the New South Wales
Departments of Planning and
Environment. The ruling will allow the
mine to develop three new longwall panels
producing around 5.6 million t of
additional coal.
Rio Tinto
The New South Wales PAC has approved
the Mt Thorley-Warkworth expansion
project, allowing the extraction of a further
230 million t of coal from the Warkworth pit
over 21 yr. Production at Mt Thorley will
end in 2022 but the site will continue to
provide services to the Warkworth pit for
the life of the mine.
Wollongong Coal
The New South Wales PAC has approved
an application for a five-year extension to
extract coal at its Wongawilli coal mine,
according to a company statement. The
mine is currently in care and maintenance
but, according to Rhys Brett, Operations
Manager at Wollongong, the extension
“paves the way for mining operations to
resume at Wongawilli and will bring back
employment and other benefits to the
Illawarra and New South Wales.”
Canada
Pacific American Coal
Initial exploration at the Elko coal project in
the East Kootenay Coal Basin of
British Columbia, Canada, has confirmed a
257.5 million t JORC resource. According to
Pacific American, three coal seams had been
identified as having hard coking coal
characteristics, and that a total of five seams
had thicknesses ranging between 2.57 – 5 m.
Pakistan
Oracle Coalfields
The UK-based developer of a coal-to-power
project in the Thar Desert in southeast Sindh
Province, Pakistan, has received a Letter of
No Objection from the Central Power
Purchasing Guarantee Ltd (CPPA) relating
to its proposed 600 MW mine mouth power
plant. The Letter of No Objection confirms
that the CPPA has no objection to the site,
size or technology proposed, allowing
Oracle Coalfields to continue its
development.
Tanzania
Kibo Mining
Kibo Mining has engaged
Tractebel Engineering, to conduct the
definitive feasibility study on the power
component of the Mbeya coal-to-power
project (MCPP) in southwestern Tanzania.
“The appointment completes the process of
providing Kibo with adequate capacity to
develop, construct and commission the
MCPP,” said Louis Coetzee, CEO of
Kibo Mining “The MCPP now has the
benefit of reputable capabilities in the form
of MinXcon to complete mining feasibility
work, Tractebel to complete the feasibility
studies on the power plant, SEPCO III as
preferred EPC contractor and Standard
Bank as financial adviser.”
