Keeping
track of
track-out
Hilary Scholz, Neptune Wheel Wash, USA,
describes how to avoid
tracking hazardous material offsite on the wheels of trucks.
T
he mission of a coal-fired power plant is to deliver electricity
to its customers, while providing a safe and healthy
environment to its workers and the surrounding community.
The operations of an energy facility require much dedication
and time. While generating electricity is critical to all of us for warm
homes and hearths, generating energy can pose certain environmental
challenges. Every truck that travels the site can create airborne particles;
every vehicle that exits the plant site can carry dust and debris out into
the streets and, as the dust particles and debris leave the site, the plant
operator is responsible. As the operation of the plant carries on and
workers come and go, there can be a trail of flyash left behind on the
roads. This trail of flyash, or trail of any sort of dirt, debris, or rock, is
what Neptune Wheel Wash commonly calls track-out, where a vehicle
literally ‘tracks out’ mud or other particles to the public roads.
